Vibrant sounding speaker that works with THE smartest AI assistant
The newest Echo Dot surprised me with how full and lively it sounds for such a small speaker. Music has clear vocals and a punchy low end without muddying the mids. Podcasts and audiobooks are crisp and easy to understand. Volume is more than enough for a kitchen, bedroom, or home office and it keeps clarity even when turned up.Setup took only a few minutes in the Alexa app. Wi Fi connected on the first try and it immediately found my existing smart bulbs and plugs. Voice recognition is excellent. It hears me over running water or background TV and responds quickly. Timers, reminders, weather, and drop in calls all work smoothly. I also like using it as a Bluetooth speaker from my phone when I want a specific playlist.The microphones and processing feel smarter than past models. It understands follow up questions and handles multi step routines without fuss. I created a good morning routine that turns on lights, reads my calendar, and starts a news briefing. It has been reliable every day. The temperature sensor is handy for triggering a fan and the clock display option is great if you place it on a nightstand.Build quality is solid. The fabric finish looks modern and the compact shape fits anywhere. The physical mic off button provides peace of mind and the light ring makes status obvious at a glance. The new power efficiency features are a nice touch since it often sits idle between commands.If you already live in the Alexa ecosystem this model is an easy upgrade. If you are new to smart speakers it is a friendly entry point with strong sound and simple controls. The Dot set the foundation of protection, personal & professional support
Like so many, my wife and I have taken the next step, bringing the Ring-Echo systems into our home. Between our Ring front door camera, indoor camera, outdoor camera, and of course the Dot, we feel covered. We took this step after a 3:30 am pounding on our front door. When looking out and not being able to see who it was, only two dark shadows very close to the door and looking back at us, protecting us on another level changed from consideration to we’re buying.The Dot was an Amazon good deal giving us the basic options. (Note: the Dot itself does not have a camera, but it works in combination with the Echo Show 8 and Ring cameras we also got, allowing us another room where we can stay on top of things without having to physically be there). Of the option, one of our most often used parts is an alarm that goes off every half hour from 9 am until 7 pm. It keeps us aware of time as we both work at home where it’s easy to not pay attention to the time, ending up missing lunch, taking a break, or whatever.We liked the Dot so much we ended up adding an Echo Show 8 for a more expanded range of options (photos, viewing things). With that we moved the Dot to the bedroom, the Echo Show 8 is in the living space, and the Ring cameras are in a few spots. Our home is covered. And while this review is specific to the Dot, it’s the fact we have been able to use it on its own, making us happy enough we ended up adding the Echo Show 8, along with the Ring cameras, and increased our safety and comfort. For the most part these are pretty easy to learn how to operate. Between the Dot – App – Show 8 we’ve gotten a lot of it down, but I admit, we’re still figuring things out.My wife and I talked about these things for a few years. It took a concerning experience to get us to do it, but we’re glad we did. We believe the Dot – along with the others – has added protection, the ability to check in whenever we want – even while working at home – can see what’s going on outside without having to look out the window or opening the door, and it has perks (reminder to drink water when coughing, time and weather, music, photos, reminders for things, etc). Love my new Echo Dot!
I already have multiple Echo devices and I chose to utililze the pre-setup option. So it was a breeze to install – all I had to do was plug it in (and turn it down :- ) — the sound was WAY up). I’ve been wanting an Echo Dot for my kitchen – I hate yelling to the living room to have Alexa set a timer. :- ) [First World Problem – right??] But what clinched the deal was the color (Deep Sea Blue) which is pretty much the same color as the cabinets in the newly remodeled kitchen; okay, so it’s now two years old. Still pretty “new” to me. Had to have it!Update – just learned I won’t miss the “old” Alexa voice – my original Echo, purchased in 2015 is old enough that apparently “she” will not be included in “Alexa+”. So she’ll still be with me. :- )”Alexa+” just started and I haven’t done much with it yet, but I kind of miss the old Alexa voice. But I’m sure I’ll get used to the new gal.I also purchased a shelf (well, nice thing is that two were included in the price) so I can mount the new Echo Dot there and not have it sitting on the counter.
