Great value and set that leans for older kids
The best thing about this set is the value – you get so much and the price is incredible compared to the brand name that pioneered the engineering/robot building with plastic bricks. The pieces of this set are thick plastic and high quality with complete compatibility with your existing lego. This is a 5 star product. My only concern is that I would not rate this set for age 8 unless your 8 year old is an 8-going-on-18 type of kid. This is more of a creative set and less of a kit. My kids are used to lego kits that have labeled bags and instructions. Because this set includes instructions for 6 different robots that all use the same set of pieces, the pieces themselves are not separately bagged or even consistently labeled. So, for example, in one instruction booklet, the same piece is called A1 while it’s called B1 in another booklet – but there’s only one of that piece. So ultimately you’re going to end up with a bucket of pieces and no way to quickly identify what piece you actually need to put any specific robot together. It’s still a GREAT set. It’s just not a set I can hand to my 9 year old and say “Here – you can build this robot!” There’s no organization of the pieces that coincides with any of the instruction booklets. If you have a kid who prefers to just experiment, or needs more pieces to add to an existing collection of robot-building bricks, you really can’t beat the value in this set. So I’d say this set is amazing for your 10-16 year-old stem kid, but something to save for later if your kid is 8 or 9 and likes to follow clear building kits.
