The ULANZI VL-81 is basically a tiny, rechargeable sun you can toss in your camera bag. I grabbed this light to improve my on-the-go video and product shoots, and it hasn’t disappointed once.First off, it’s shockingly bright for something the size of a deck of cards. You can dial in the bi-color temperature from warm to cool, which saves a ton of hassle matching other light sources on set. The diffusion panel softens things nicely so you don’t nuke your subject with harsh LED glare.Battery life? For a built-in 3000mAh cell, it’s a champ. I get a couple hours on medium brightness, which is more than enough for short shoots or interviews. The magnetic mount system and cold shoe options are icing on the cake — stick it practically anywhere, and it just works. Not just for cameras
My camera has a flash for photos, but videos come out grainy with improper lighting. This light illuminates well and evenly making a big quality difference. The temperature adjustment goes from warm to fluorescent quality, which is appropriate to what I’m using this camera for. In addition to video (warm light), I use this light for home improvement uses (fluorescent). When mounted on a small tripod it has provided good illumination for installing appliances like over stove microwaves, dishwashers and dryers. I also used it for installation of a car stereo in an older car. The battery charges decently fast and is rated for four hours. I have never used it more than two hours in a row on high, and I still have a couple of bars of power left. I’ve had this for about 2 years now and use it a couple of hours a month.

Here’s the truth you need to know on this light!
I was so nervous to buy but I took a chance and did. I received my package on the 2nd day as promised and I was not disappointed. This is the coolest light I’ve ever had. It will go perfect with my gimbal. This thing is super bright and the battery lasted 4 hours continued use. It’s the cheapest costing light but this thing puts out! I highly recommend and I will be back in a few days to post a video. So go buy it!

June 6, 2025 – changed title to lessen possibility of confusion, item is not RGB color adjustable.Cost effective units that offer adjustable color – daylight to incandescent. Somewhat dimmable. Quite handy for impromptu relatively close video use.Three cold shoes. The fixed base that fits a camera flash mount also has a 1/4-20 threaded insert for tripod use.Battery holds a good charge when stored. As my sessions have been short, I am unable to say how long the battery lasts when the light is on, but I have never used longer than one of four indicator lights. Other reviewers have noted hours of use. A short USB to USB C charging cable was included.

great small light for the price. BUY IT!!!
For a 20 dollar light you really can’t complain!! I used an old canon 1ds MKii 24-70 F4 for all photos except for the last. ISO 800 on a Sony A7Riii with a Sony 24-105. Most people have new cameras with great high ISO etc… I usually go to reptile expos and take ok photos. I did not want to flash wildlife at an expo and leave them looking blank. This light is perfect. Sits nice on a camera, just remove lens hood and you’re ready to go. I ordered a second light. For a small $20 you will get your $20 worth of light. at ISO 100 light is not strong enough. You will need to move your ISO upwards 800 plus, or slow down your F stop and open up your aperture. My lenses only go to F4. Hope this helps. I did not use a phone I used an actual cameras with pro grade level zoom lenses.
