Reliable Waterproof Radios for Overlanding and Camping
Expectations and Use CaseI purchased the Motorola T605_H2O Talkabout Two-Way Radios about a year ago, mainly for use on camping and overlanding trips. My primary expectation was a rugged, waterproof radio set that would handle outdoor conditions and provide dependable communication between vehicles and when hiking away from camp.Performance and Real-World EvaluationOver multiple trips, these radios have worked exactly as advertised. They held a charge throughout weekend adventures, saving the hassle of constant recharging. Floating capability and the water-activated flashlight are features I thankfully haven’t had to put to the test, but they add peace of mind for river crossings and rainy weather. Range has always been solid in open areas and more than enough for campsite comms.Pros:• Waterproof and durable build truly suitable for outdoor use• Holds a charge well; rarely needed a mid-trip recharge• Clear communication with good range for open environments• Easy pairing and simple controlsCons:• Haven’t encountered any notable issues or complaintsComparison to Product DescriptionEverything described by Motorola held true in my experience. The radios performed without any issues, met all my outdoor needs, and didn’t present any surprises—good or bad.Actionable TakeawayIf you’re looking for a trustworthy set of waterproof two-way radios for camping, overlanding, or emergency planning, this set does the job. They’re reliable, easy to use, and exactly as described.SummaryA solid, no-nonsense pair of radios that’s well worth the price for outdoor enthusiasts seeking peace of mind and reliable communication. Would recommend based on nearly a year of positive use.

    Pretty hard to beat
I brought a pair of these along on an off-road expedition and quickly found them to be quite superior to the pre-configured ones handed out by the trip leader!First, the downsides, which are minor: one is that this is FRS-only, so a max of 2 watts transmit power, but the upside is there is no licensing requirement. Just know that they only transmit at full power on channels 1-7 and 17-22; channels 8-16 are 0.5 watts only and best reserved for your kids’ secret backyard spy missions or when you have wide-open spaces and want to conserve battery.Second, these are a bit bulky. They’re fine for me, but for a woman or anyone with small hands, they might be too big. In that case you might be happier with a non-waterproof radio like the Baofeng GM-15 or Radioddity equivalent, which are not only more compact but also offer more power (along with requiring a license, but that’s only $35 and there’s no test involved). Those things said, these are really good radios. On my trip, while I was using the unit provided by the trip leader, nobody could hear me transmit—which was a serious problem at one point. The batteries were good and the unit appeared operational—and I could hear everyone else—but it had apparently failed, and the transmit function no longer worked. When I switched to one of these, instantly everyone was hearing me loud and clear, which saved my bacon (I had an overheating engine). I didn’t come close to touching the battery capacity in two days of continuous use (without recharging), and I was very pleased with the performance overall. The controls are fairly intuitive and the screen is clear (first photo), with an easy-to-activate bright green backlight that makes things really stand out in dim light situations. (The shadowing visible on the display in the photo is a some kind of artifact produced by the camera; the display is completely clear in reality.)There are also a larger number of “privacy codes” on these units than on most, which means that if everyone in your group are using these (or other similarly-equipped Motorolas) you’ll have a larger number of privacy options, which increases your odds of finding a clear channel.Lastly, the option (as seen in the second photo) to pop in regular AA batteries in place of the rechargeable battery-pack that comes with the unit gives you good backup power options in case you don’t have easy access to AC while out and about. These units are sealed against water, which means they are also sealed against changes in barometric pressure—which can in some situations pressurize the unit and reduce the speaker volume. If you’re not getting full volume, try unplugging and then re-plugging the charging port to equalize pressure. All in all these were a very satisfying purchase that I will be using more in the days to come!

Reliable Radios for Harsh Outdoor Use
We run an outdoor survival skills school, and these have been amazing. We’ve taken them out in rain, snow, and on the river—they hold up great. The range hasn’t been an issue, they charge quickly, they’re durable, and they’re simple to use. Great little radios. Loud enough to hear and comes in clear. They are a little more than a baseline radio but well worth the extra if you’re doing anything rugged.

Works great but batteries aren’t the best.
I wasn’t sure about these due to other reviews. But we purchased 4 of them for our worksite. construction in a remote area where we don’t have cell reception. They work well on our 200 acre property in the woods and valley. We have not tested them from far edge to far edge but I dare say they are good enough. Rugged and easy to use. Only bummer is the batteries need to be changed out more frequently than we would like. They stop holding a charge after a month or so. We do use them on a daily basis and recharge them over night. They do not come with a charging block/plug but do come with a usb C cable.

1 yr, batteries dead, stored properly.
Out of the two walkie talkies I purchased the battery is completely dead and useless on one of them. I bought them exactly one year ago and have barely used them at all they just sit in my bedroom

    GREAT RADIOS W/TERRIBLE BATTERY PACKS
I SPENT A DAY GETTING THESE RADIOS CHARGED (ALL 4 BATTERY PACKS). THEN SPENT TIME FIGURING OUT ALL OF THE FEATURES AS THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE LACKING IN INFORMATION. ONCE COMPLETED, I WAS GOING TO SHOW MY WIFE HOW THEY WORKED SO WE’RE READY FOR AN UPCOMING TRIP. STILL THE SAME DAY…ALL BUT ONE BATTERY PACK WERE COMPLETELY DEAD, THE OTHER HAD ALREADY LOST 1/2 OF IT’S CHARGE. I REPLACED THE BATTERIES WITH FRESH AA’S, ONLY WORKED IN ONE RADIO. I REALLY LIKE THE RADIOS, BUT THEY ARE CRAP!!! MOTOROLA KNOWS THIS AND BASED ON PREVIOUS REVIEWS HAS DONE NOTHING ABOUT IT! WILL BE RETURNING THESE IN SEARCH OF A BETTER PRODUCT…

    great radios
We bought these to use on our boat with a Bluetooth wireless earpiece. The have great range and are small and compact. The battery life seems to be great and we have no issues with these whatsoever. Should have bought these FRS radios much sooner
